Itanagar, Dec 28: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed pride in the state’s ability to preserve its unique indigenous identity amidst the waves of modernity and development.
Speaking at the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP) on December 27, Khandu highlighted the importance of safeguarding Arunachal’s cultural heritage for future generations.
Reflecting on a historic move, Khandu acknowledged the pivotal role of the state’s first Chief Minister, P.K. Thungon, under whose leadership the Assembly passed legislation in 1978 to prevent forced or induced religious conversions. The Chief Minister revealed that the act, dormant for decades, will soon be enforced following a recent directive from the Gauhati High Court.
“The process of framing the rules is underway. Soon, Arunachal Pradesh will have a structured Freedom of Religion Act in place, ensuring the preservation of our indigenous faith and culture,” he said, emphasizing the necessity of protecting Arunachal’s distinct traditions against the global trend of vanishing indigenous cultures.
Union Minister Jual Oram lauded the IFCSAP’s efforts, calling the organization a model for other states aiming to safeguard indigenous heritage. He reaffirmed the central government’s support for preserving Arunachal Pradesh’s cultural wealth.
The celebrations showcased the state’s vibrant cultural diversity through traditional dances, melodious music, and sacred rituals.
