Manipur: Militants target Imphal East villages, 3 injured including video journalist

Imphal, Dec 28: In the intense firing between hills-based militants and security forces in Imphal East, that has continued since Friday, the number of injured people has increased to three. The latest of the injuries took place on Saturday morning as gunbattle resumed after few hours of break.

A video journalist of a local TV channel sustained a bullet injury on Saturday morning. He has been identified as Leimapokpam Kabichandra of Impact TV, and was hit by a bullet on his left thigh during the attack on Thamnapokpi in Imphal East. He was rushed to Raj Medicity for medical aid.

Alleged Kuki militants have launched a series of assaults from the hilltops of Kangpokpi district, targeting peripheral areas, including Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi, since Friday, to which the security forces have retaliated adequately.

On Friday, two people, including a policeman were injured in the gunfight in Sanasabi village. The policeman, identified as 37-year-old K Haridash, suffered bullet injuries on his left shoulder and was rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences around 3.30 pm, a senior police officer said. He is set to undergo a minor surgery, officials at the hospital said.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has condemned the firing incident, calling it “cowardly and unprovoked attack on innocent lives”.

“Strongly condemn the indiscriminate firing by Kuki militants at Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi in Imphal East, which injured civilians and security personnel. This cowardly and unprovoked attack on innocent lives is an assault on peace and harmony. Adequate security personnel have been rushed to the affected areas. The injured are receiving necessary medical assistance, and the government calls for calm and unity in the face of such challenges. Central forces and state police should have proper coordination and understanding when dealing with such situations,” he wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.
