Boko, Dec 20: Hundreds of mourners, including Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Bora, Congress MLAs, and well-wishers, gathered at Kismat Kathmi village under Boko LAC on Thursday to attend the Namaj-e-Janaza of Advocate Mridul Islam. The 45-year-old legal secretary of APCC and advocate at Gauhati High Court passed away during a protest march led by APCC towards Raj Bhawan in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Mridul Islam’s death has sparked outrage, with Bhupen Bora alleging excessive police action during the protest, including the use of tear gas. Bora accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of suppressing democratic movements through authoritarian means. “The tears of the people of Assam will sweep the BJP away from Dispur,” Bora remarked, condemning what he termed the exploitation of the poor through policies like the installation of pre-paid electricity meters.

Bora claimed that 23.7 lakh pre-paid meters had been forcibly installed in Assam’s households despite government orders to exempt poor families. He called the move a conspiracy to generate revenue at the expense of the underprivileged. “We lost Mridul Islam and saw many injured, including journalists, because of police excesses. This is an attempt to intimidate the Congress party, but we will not stop protesting against corruption and injustice,” he said.

The APCC president demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident and financial compensation for Mridul Islam’s family. He warned that failure to act would result in Congress gheraoing the Janata Bhawan in Guwahati on Friday. Bora also demanded an apology from the Chief Minister to the bereaved family.

Senior Congress leaders, including Rekibuddin Ahmed, Nandita Das, Nurul Huda, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, A. K. Rasid Alom, AICC Secretary Manoj Chouhan, and MPs Gaurav Gogoi and Rakibul Hussain, visited Mridul Islam’s family to express condolences.

Chaygaon MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed announced that APCC would provide financial assistance of Rs. 25 lakh to the family and ensure the education of Mridul Islam’s two daughters. MP Gaurav Gogoi accused the BJP-led government of undermining democracy, likening the current situation to the secret killings during the AGP government’s tenure. “This tragedy demands immediate accountability from the state government,” he said.

The incident has drawn widespread attention, with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge personally expressing condolences to the family.

APCC leaders also staged a protest at Rajiv Bhawan in Goroimari, burning an effigy of Union Home Minister Amit Shah for recent controversial remarks on Dr. Ambedkar.
