The police and PDS departments have initiated action against the smuggling of PDS rice.

They have issued look out notice to prevent the family members of former minister Perni Nani, from flying off to foreign countries.

The civil supplies department has begun to assess the quantity of PDS rice smuggled from the godowns.

The prime accused in the case had sought bail and the petition would come up for hearing on December 19.

With the civil supplies officials issuing notice to Perni's family to pay for the missing quantity of rice, along with the penalty, Nani family members paid Rs 1 crore through three DDs on December 13. Later, they also submitted DDs worth Rs 70 lakh, making a total payment of Rs 1.70 crore.

This means that the civil supplies officials themselves provided an opportunity to Nani's family to get rid of the case.

As Nani is a former minister and he also has the support of the officials in Krishna district, the district officials are trying to minimize the intensity of the case.

There is criticism against Jana Sena leader and civil supplies minister Nadendla Manohar too for not carrying out inspection of Nani's godown. Usually, wherever Nadendla Manohar goes, he inspects he super bazaars, rice mills and ports. Despite the allegations on Nani, neither Nadendla Manohar nor Home Minister Anitha appear to be serious over the case.

Surprsingly, none of Nani's family members have been arrested in connection with the case so far.

About 20 days ago, Nani lodged a complaint that PDS rice from his godown was stolen. Following this, the officials reached the godown but with the staff remaining absent, they broke open the locks and gained entry into the godown. They are still assessing the rice stock in the godown.

It is learnt that the rice bags missing are much more in number than that stated either by Nani or by the civil supplies officials so far. Nani's family members stated that 3,200 rice bags were missing from the godown while officials, during the preliminary inquiry, found that over 3,708 bags were missing. Now, it is being estimated that the quantity of rice missing from the godown could be even more. However, the final figure is not out yet.
