Maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma appeared before the Andhra Pradesh police for questioning on Friday in connection with a case involving offensive social media posts and inappropriate comments. He was summoned to the Ongole Rural Police Station, where Circle Inspector Srikant Babu conducted the interrogation.
The case stems from posts made during the previous election campaign when Varma, a vocal supporter of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), released his film Vyuham. During this period, he shared manipulated images of then-opposition leader and current Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Minister Nara Lokesh, and Jana Sena Party President and current Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan. The images were allegedly intended to demean their public personas.
The controversy began when M. Ramalingam, a local Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader from Maddipadu, complained against Varma. In response, the police registered a case and issued notices to the director. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities questioning Varma about his posts and their potential influence on the political atmosphere during the elections.
Several YSRCP leaders, including Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, accompanied Varma to the police station.
