“Elections are tough, but we are positive on the outcomes”
Shillong, Jan 15: NPP chief and Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said that the party is upbeat on its prospect to win both Khasi and Jaintia Hills council elections, slated for February 21 next.
“Every election is different, every election is tough, and there is no question of being over confident. We need to work hard and we are hopeful that things will be positive and we will win the ADC polls in KHADC and JHADC,” he said.
He informed that the party has held a review meeting with the candidates for the KHADC and JHADC polls. “We got a positive response. But of course there are challenges and we have to work hard. Our candidates are at the grassroot even as we speak now. So also our leaders are prepared throughout the state and they are working tirelessly for the coming elections.”
Anti-incumbency
Admitting that anti-incumbency is something which no government can avoid, the chief minister said, “NPP led EC has delivered in KHADC, many important Bills were passed, pending issues were resolved by the current EC. Our MDCs have performed and they have delivered.”
Accepting that there are challenges to deal, he said that NPP led EC has started innovative programme, including documentation and research on different aspects of tradition and culture of the Khasis.
“Opposition will say many things but this EC has done very well,” he asserted.
Religion and Politics
On the attempt to mix religion and politics, the NPP chief said, “I don’t have any comments to make on that. It is up to the particular political party on how they want to do this but I think our society has always maintained that we always want to keep these aspects of religions away from politics. I think society will decide and people decide, I have nothing to say, I have no comment what kind of politics they are playing or they are not playing, that is up to them but I think at the end of the day the people are going to vote and decide and I am sure people are going to look at all aspects before voting.”
