Manipur: CoTU declares 12-hour shutdown over deployment of central forces in Saibol

Imphal, Jan 2: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills, has announced a 12-hour total shutdown, protesting what they describe as the Government’s inaction on their demand for the withdrawal of central forces from Saibol.

The shutdown will commence at 2:00 PM on January 2, 2025, and conclude at 2:00 AM on January 3, 2025, affecting the entire region.

Tribal communities have voiced sharp criticism over the presence of central forces in Saibol, viewing it as a direct affront to their rights and dignity. According to CoTU, the deployment has disrupted normal life, fostered fear, and eroded trust, jeopardizing peace in the area.

In a press statement, CoTU leaders expressed frustration with the Government’s lack of response to their calls for dialogue. “The Government’s indifference to our peaceful appeals is unacceptable. We are left with no choice but to intensify our protest,” the statement read.

The shutdown is expected to bring the region to a standstill, halting all vehicular movement, closing businesses, suspending educational activities, and shutting down government offices.

The CoTU has emphasized that their demand for the withdrawal of central forces stems from the need to restore peace and harmony in Saibol, urging the Government to address their concerns without further delay.
