Shillong , Jan 16: IIM Shillong, through its Northeast Centre for Community Impact and Engagement (NE-CCIE), organized a roundtable discussion addressing the region’s waste management challenges and opportunities on Thursday.
The event brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Meghalaya Institute of Governance, Bethany Society, OCU, and Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Nongthymmai Pyllun, to explore sustainable practices for managing Shillong’s growing waste concerns.
Prof. D P Goyal, Director of IIM Shillong, inaugurated the event, emphasizing the urgent need for collaboration among academic institutions, government bodies, and local communities to tackle waste management in urban areas. He shared insights into the critical role of sustainability. Col. Dinesh Adhikari, CAO of IIM Shillong, highlighted the institution’s innovative on-campus waste management practices as a model for broader implementation. Dr. Teidorlang Lyngdoh, Chair of NE-CCIE, moderated the discussions, ensuring meaningful contributions from all participants.
The dialogue focused on innovative approaches to waste segregation, recycling, and community engagement. Participants stressed the importance of public awareness campaigns, introducing labeled bins for waste segregation, and engaging local communities through training and employment initiatives. Ideas like installing water ATMs to reduce plastic dependency and promoting river stewardship to preserve ecosystems were also discussed.
Other key proposals included establishing recycling centers and composting facilities, creating economic opportunities through waste commercialization, and launching pilot projects to refine waste management systems. The need for supportive government policies and partnerships with NGOs was underlined as essential for success.
The roundtable concluded with a shared commitment to integrating innovative solutions with community-driven efforts and policy support to achieve a cleaner, more sustainable Shillong.
