Chakali Ilamma varsity included in TG Universities Act

Hyderabad:The state government has amended the Telangana Universities Act of 1991 to include Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s University, following Governor Jishnu Dev Varma’s assent. This development comes in the wake of an agitation by students of the institution, formerly known as Osmania University College for Women, Koti. Elevated to the status of a state university in 2022 and initially renamed Telangana Mahila Vishwavidyalayam, it was rechristened as Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s University in September last to honour the legacy of the revolutionary who stood up against feudal lords in Visnur, Warangal. The University Grants Commission (UGC) had not recognised the university. In November 2024, protests intensified as students demanded UGC accreditation, expressing fears that their degrees might be deemed invalid. Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, in a letter to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, had spoken about the urgency of the matter. The Governor’s assent to the amendment is seen as a step towards addressing these concerns, but the pressure remains on the state government to ensure swift UGC accreditation.
