6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Advisory in Japan

Tokyo: Late Monday, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in southwest Japan caused two minor tsunamis, but no damage was reported.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 36 kilometers, approximately 18 kilometers off the coast of Miyazaki prefecture in the Kyushi region, at approximately 21:19 pm (1219 GMT).

The public was advised to avoid coastal waters by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), which warned of potential tsunami waves of up to one meter (three feet).

According to the weather agency, two ports in the area experienced two minor tsunamis, each measuring about 20 centimeters.

There were no immediate injuries, according to local media, and live video images from the area on public broadcaster NHK showed calm waters, ships functioning, and traffic moving regularly.

Japan is one of the most tectonically active nations in the world, situated at the western edge of the Pacific “Ring of Fire” on top of four major tectonic plates.
