Many expected the Sacramento Kings to make the playoffs and have a strong season, especially after acquiring veteran wing DeMar DeRozan, a six-time All-Star, this past summer.

Instead, they have sagged to a 14-19 record, which puts them in 12th place in the Western Conference.

They made headlines by firing Mike Brown after he had been their head coach for over two seasons, but just prior to firing him, the Kings did try to make a substantial trade.

Per Legion Hoops, they checked in on Zach LaVine, Brandon Ingram, Cam Thomas and Kyle Kuzma, and they were reluctant to give Brown a pink slip until the end.

“They even asked Brown if there were moves to make with the roster or the staff that might help… ‘Nobody wanted to fire Mike’ one Kings source said. ‘He’s a good coach. People here really care about him. Until the very last moment we were trying to make it work.’”

Brown has a long coaching history in the NBA, and it started all the way back in the 1997-98 season when he was an assistant with the Washington Wizards.

He started to cut his teeth when he joined Gregg Popovich’s staff on the San Antonio Spurs for the 2000-01 season, and in his third season there, the team won the NBA championship.

After head coaching stints years later with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, he was an assistant with the Golden State Warriors under Steve Kerr, which gave him three more world championship rings in 2017, 2018 and 2022.

Sacramento has bona fide stars in DeRozan, De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, as well as a few nice supporting players, but it hasn’t come together, and their margin of error is very thin in terms of having a shot at making the playoffs.
