UnitedHealthcare names a new CEO after death of Brian Thompson: Reports

According to sources, UnitedHealthcare announced a new top executive on Thursday, UnitedHealth Group, about two months after its former CEO, Brian Thompson, was shot and killed in New York City.

CNN and CNBC are saying that the company’s former top executive, Brian Thompson, was attacked and killed in Manhattan in early December, and that veteran internal executive Tim Noel now leads the organization.

From April 2021 until his murder, Thompson, an American businessman, served as the CEO of United Healthcare, the insurance division of UnitedHealth Group.

According to the company’s website, Noel has been with UHC for almost two decades and was formerly in charge of the Medicare and retirement business.

“(Noel) brings unparalleled experience to this role with a proven track record and strong commitment to improving how health care works for consumers, physicians, employers, governments and our other partners,” the organization stated in a statement to CNN.

Who is Tim Noel?

In 2007, Noel began working at UnitedHealth Group, “serving in financial and operational roles,” as stated on the organization’s website.

During Northwest Airlines’ bankruptcy procedures, he gained experience in financial reorganization. In 2008, the airline merged with Delta.

What happened to Brian Thompson?

On December 4, Thompson, 50, was shot and killed while walking to a conference outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan.

After a five-day manhunt, the alleged shooter, Luigi Mangione, was eventually caught and taken into custody at a McDonald’s restaurant in Pennsylvania.

In April 2021, UnitedHealthcare appointed Brian Thompson as its CEO.

Mangione is charged with almost a dozen crimes, including two counts of second-degree murder, one of which is an act of terrorism, and one case of first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism. It is alleged that Mangione attempted to “intimidate or coerce a civilian population.”

On December 23, he entered a not guilty plea to accusations of terrorism and state murder.

He faces a life sentence without the possibility of release if found guilty of the state counts. Next month, there will be a hearing on the evidence that will be used in the trial.

Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, has previously described the murder as a killing meant to incite fear. According to the prosecution, Mangione entered New York City ten days before Thompson was killed, but she disguised herself with a mask and a phony ID card to avoid detection.
