Sculptor Replicates Christ the Redeemer in a Needle’s Eye

Warangal: Noted micro-sculptor Ajay Kumar has crafted a microscopic culture of the ‘Christ the Redeemer’ statue, within the eye of a needle to mark Christmas Day celebrations at Mattewada in Warangal. While the original 30-metre statue is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the intricate sculpture crafted within the eye of a needle is 1.1 mm in height which has Jesus’ fingers and folds in his garments. Ajay Kumar used self-prepared wax, plastic powder and caterpillar hair for colouring. He spent 90 hours over two months to complete the work which can only be viewed under a microscope. Ajay Kumar is one of the three to four micro-artists in the world who create sculptures inside the eye of a needle. Last year, he had sculpted ‘The Last Supper’ depicting Jesus with his twelve disciples at their final meal. In 2018, Ajay Kumar created a 0.95 mm tall and 0.17 mm wide microscopic golden cross sculpture of Jesus in the eye of a needle. In 2019, he had set a world record and was recognized five times by the Limca Book of Records. A recipient of several national and international awards, Ajay Kumar was appreciated by former Prime Ministers P. V. Narasimha Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
