Meghalaya Chief Secretary hopeful of breakthrough in NEHU crisis

Shillong, Jan 8: Meghalaya Chief Secretary DP Wahlang has expressed optimism about resolving the ongoing crisis at the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) as he prepares to meet top officials in charge of higher education at the central government level.

Wahlang will meet the Secretary and Additional Secretary of Higher Education, Government of India, on January 13 to address concerns that have plagued NEHU in recent months. “I am in touch with the Secretary, Government of India, as well as the Additional Secretary. In fact, I will be meeting the Secretary on Monday (January 13) to brief him about the situation, as he has just assumed the position of Secretary of Higher Education. I will also advise him on the necessary steps to be taken for NEHU, and I am hopeful that we should achieve a breakthrough soon,” Wahlang said on Tuesday.

The crisis at NEHU revolves around alleged irregularities and administrative lapses under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. PS Shukla. These issues have prompted protests led by the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), both demanding Prof. Shukla’s removal.

In response to these allegations, the Ministry of Education recently set up a two-member committee to investigate the claims. The findings of this committee, combined with Wahlang’s discussions with higher education officials, are expected to be pivotal in addressing the unrest.

The NEHU community has been vocal about its grievances, with student unions accusing the administration of undermining the university’s autonomy and credibility. The ongoing protests have disrupted campus activities, intensifying calls for urgent intervention from both the state and central governments.
