Kohli’s 18, a tribute to his father?

What’s in a number? A lot, if the number is 18, and you’re Virat Kohli.

The cricketer, who has legions of fans, recently made waves by participating in a Ranji Trophy match at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. On two different days, he arrived in two different cars, both with the figure 18 in their number plates. The cars, registered with the RTO in Gurgaon (North), bore the plates HR 26 EX 0018 and HR 26 CJ 1818.

Incidentally, Kohli’s jersey number is also 18.

While the significance this number holds for the ace cricketer has never been spelt out, it is speculated that it has a connection to his late father, Prem Kohli, who passed away on December 18, 2006. (It may be recalled that Kohli played a match hours after his father’s demise, testifying to his commitment to the game.)

Meanwhile, Kohli's participation in the Ranji Trophy match has reignited enthusiasm among cricket fans and highlighted the significance of domestic cricket in shaping the careers of international stars.
