Shillong, Jan 14: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) on Tuesday demanded that the state government address several deficiencies at the Shillong Civil Hospital, which are adversely affecting the people, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who depend on the institution for treatment.
After meeting with the medical superintendent to discuss complaints received from the public, FKJGP president Dundee C. Khongsit expressed serious concern over the various shortcomings faced by the hospital.
“Access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right of every citizen in the state. Therefore, we urge the government to prioritize the health sector, as inadequate healthcare facilities are disproportionately affecting the poor, who rely entirely on government institutions. We also demand that the government take immediate measures to address these deficiencies in the interest and welfare of the state’s citizens,” Khongsit told reporters.
The FKJGP president revealed that during the meeting, the medical superintendent informed the delegation that the hospital authority had already raised the issue of the non-operational MRI machine with the government as far back as 2018. However, no action has been taken to make it functional.
“From her statement, it is alarming to imagine that if such essential equipment is unavailable in the civil hospital located in the state capital, what kind of healthcare services can we expect in rural areas of the state?” he remarked.
Khongsit further stated that the medical superintendent mentioned that after the pathologist was transferred to Ganesh Das Hospital, no steps have been taken to appoint a replacement at the Shillong Civil Hospital, leaving pathology tests unavailable.
“The medical superintendent also cited a shortage of staff as the reason for the hospital’s inability to address the daily complaints submitted by the public in the complaint box,” he added.
