Kohima, Dec 17: The leaders of the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) have announced that tripartite talks with the Centre and the state government are in an advanced stage.
Speaking to media persons, ENPO General Secretary M. Honang Konyak expressed optimism that the Central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, would fulfil its proposed offer of a Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT) in the interest of the people of eastern Nagaland.
During the tripartite meeting held in New Delhi on December 13, the ENPO delegation reiterated its unwavering demand for a separate “Frontier Nagaland” state. Konyak emphasized that while the ENPO has acknowledged the Centre’s present challenges, it has agreed to temporarily accept the government’s offer for FNT—a unique arrangement with executive, legislative, and financial autonomy.
“The ENPO, having considered the difficulties of the Centre at the present juncture, decided to temporarily accept the offer of the government for FNT, a unique arrangement with executive, legislative, and financial autonomy,” Konyak stated.
He further noted that the December 13 meeting marked significant progress. The parties agreed to convene the next round of tripartite discussions by the second week of January 2025 to address unresolved issues.
Since 2010, the ENPO has been advocating for a separate ‘Frontier Nagaland Territory’ or separate state comprising six eastern Nagaland districts—Kiphire, Longleng, Mon, Noklak, Shamator, and Tuensang—which are home to seven tribes classified as “backward tribes”: Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Phom, Tikhir, Sangtam, and Yimkhiung.
