Cops Arrest Maoist Leader
Visakhapatnam: The Alluri Sitarama Raju district police arrested Kovvasi Somda, a key member of the CPI (Maoist) organisation, during a joint combing operation on Friday. Somda, also known as Mukesh, was apprehended in the forested area of Kalleru village on the outskirts of Chinturu Mandal. The 33-year-old tribal activist, originally from Gompad village in Sukma District, Chhattisgarh, has been implicated in numerous violent activities against security forces and civilians. According to the police, Somda was a senior member of the Maoist hierarchy, rising from a junior party member in 2014 to becoming the Action Team Commander by March 2024. His arrest follows a detailed investigation linking him to at least 17 criminal cases involving attacks on security personnel, destruction of property, and potential terrorist activities. Superintendent of Police Amit Bardar revealed that Somda was apprehended while transporting explosive materials. The police seized five electrical detonators, two hand grenades, and multiple explosive components and wiring. Officials told to expedite railway works Kakinada: Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district collector R. Mahesh Kumar instructed officials to expedite the Narsapur railway line and track works. Train No. 08530 Visakhapatnam–Deen Dayal Upadhyay Special Express, departing Visakhapatnam at 5.35 pm on Thursdays (January 23, February 6, and February 27), will arrive at Kothavalasa at 6.05 pm and depart at 6.07 pm, reaching Deen Dayal Upadhyay on Saturdays at 4.30 am.
