Assam: Wild elephant electrocuted in Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh, Dec 20: A wild elephant has been killed after being electrocuted in the Madhupur Paroliguri village of Dibrugarh district.

The incident occurred on the night of December 19 when the elephant came into contact with an 11,000-volt high-tension power line hanging dangerously low in the area.

The power line, which has been precariously suspended over agricultural fields for over two years now, posed a significant threat to both humans and wildlife.

Despite numerous complaints by local residents, the power department has so far failed to take corrective measures to rectify the issue.

This gross negligence on the part of the power department has further affected agricultural activities in the area. Farmers have been unable to cultivate their lands, fearing the potential hazards posed by the exposed power lines.

The department’s inaction has resulted in the tragic death of the innocent wild elephant, bringing to fore the lack of accountability and action on its part.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Dibrugarh, BV Sandeep, said, “A wild elephant died due to electrocution at the Madhupur Parolinguri village, which was a part of the forest area. A herd of wild elephants had been passing through the village when the unfortunate incident occurred.”

The department buried the elephant carcass after conducting its autopsy. However, the DFO questioned the department’s apathy over the alarming situation, asking, “How could the power department allow such high voltage power lines to pass through a forest area, especially when it is also an elephant corridor?”
