When news broke of the Miami Heat possibly parting ways with Jimmy Butler, multiple teams immediately rose to the top of the race to acquire the six-time All-Star.
The Phoenix Suns were seen as perhaps the most likely landing spot for Butler, for a number of reasons.
Both Butler and the Suns reportedly were intrigued by each other, but now it seems like any potential deal is being put on hold.
“The Suns are going to wait until mid-January before deciding on whether to further pursue Jimmy Butler, per [radio host] John Gambadoro,” Evan Sidery of Forbes wrote on X. “Phoenix is tied for 8th in the Western Conference standings, but they want to see how their roster further jells together before making an aggressive trade.”

Inside reporting says that Butler wants to go to a team that has the potential to win a championship as soon as possible.
That limits his options, of course, but the Suns definitely feel like a team that is just a change or two away from being true contenders.
Plus, Butler would be able to play alongside Kevin Durant and Devin Booker.
But acquiring Butler will be a difficult task for the Suns, especially if they try to make Bradley Beal part of the equation.
Because of his protective no-trade clause, Beal is a tough trade asset that isn’t easy to move.
Other issues could complicate things, such as team chemistry and depleting Phoenix’s depth.
Instead of rushing into a trade that could cost a lot and maybe not produce results, the Suns are going to take their time and come back to this situation in a few weeks.
Where will they be at that time, and will another team have swooped in to acquire Butler by then?
