The NBA season doesn’t truly begin until a superstar starts to pop up in rampant trade rumors after their team gets off to an uninspiring start, and this is exactly what has happened with Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat after the team’s 12-10 start.

Butler certainly wouldn’t have been most fans’ first guess as to who would be the first superstar to hit the trade block this season, but the surprising development seems to have some validity as Butler himself recently shared a brief 2-word response about his future in Miami.

Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald shared on X that Butler responded “Who knows?” when asked about his long-term future with the Heat, and when asked if he wants to spend the rest of his career with Miami, replied, “I don’t know.”

That is not exactly a glowing endorsement, and Butler added that he is actually enjoying the trade rumors because there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Butler’s future was already in question before this dissent began surfacing due to his status as an impending free agent in the upcoming offseason, though he also has a player option in 2025-26 for $52.4 million that he could also exercise.

The reality is that Butler is 35 and has missed over a quarter of his games with the Heat over the last five years, and it’s fair to wonder that even though he is still a superstar and has brought this team to two NBA Finals appearances, his best days could be waning.

This will be a fun subplot to follow over the next few weeks.
