On Tuesday, Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler reportedly reiterated to management that he wants to be traded before the NBA’s Feb. 6 trade deadline, thus continuing the standoff between him and the franchise.
While it doesn’t seem the Heat are in any real rush to deal him, they have reportedly talked to some teams about a potential trade without finding any offer that has intrigued them.
It has been believed that what set Butler off was team president Pat Riley’s comment last spring that he should’ve kept quiet when he said the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks would’ve lost to Miami had he been able to play in the playoffs.
But now, according to The Athletic, new details have emerged that Butler grew frustrated with the Heat when they failed to significantly upgrade their roster over the last year or two, per NBACentral.

The Heat overachieved quite often from 2020 to 2023 in Butler’s first four seasons with them, as they reached the NBA Finals twice and got to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals on another occasion.
But after losing the 2023 championship to the Denver Nuggets in five games, it was beyond clear they needed help, especially on offense, in order to go all the way.
Since then, the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks have made aggressive moves to significantly improve, while the Heat have regressed — they hold a 20-18 record, which puts them in seventh place in the East.
It appears they have exhausted the possibilities of their current core, and perhaps trading Butler for draft capital would be their best move these days.
