Paris Saint-Germain took a short-term approach by loaning Xavi Simons to RB Leipzig for another season, but the uncertainty surrounding his future is now over, with the German club retaining the player.
Back in September, Christian Falk reported that Manchester City and Liverpool were closely monitoring Simons’ situation. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Manchester United had also shown interest earlier in the summer, highlighting the Dutch midfielder’s growing reputation among Europe’s top clubs.
According to Sport Bild, Leipzig was eager to make Simons’ move permanent as early as January. While PSG’s €80 million price tag initially posed a challenge, that no longer seems to be an issue, with Leipzig keeping hold of him.
Why did PSG choose to sell Xavi Simons?
On Thursday, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Simons has officially joined RB Leipzig on a permanent transfer from PSG. The deal is worth up to €80 million, including add-ons, with an initial fee of €55 million and a sell-on clause.
The question PSG supporters will be asking themselves is, why choose to sell the player now and maybe not convince him to be part of this project with several young talents?
RMC Sports’ Fabrice Hawkins reported on Thursday that Simons chose not to return to PSG last summer after his loan at RB Leipzig because Luis Enrique couldn’t guarantee him regular playing time. As a result, PSG turned their attention to Désiré Doué, who they secure from Stade Rennais last summer.

Last month, CaughtOffside reported that Manchester United have a realistic shot at outmaneuvering local rivals Manchester City to secure Simons next summer.
