The Miami Heat have officially transitioned into a new era.

Moving on from Jimmy Butler was a necessary evil, not only because of his feud with the organization but also because they were thinking about the future.

Now, Tyler Herro has the keys, but he knows the team has its work cut out for them.

Talking to Frank Isola and Brian Scalabrine on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Herro admitted that they’re not contenders right now:

“If we’re calling a spade a spade, we’re not contenders right now,” he said.

The first-time All-Star has finally broken out and played like the franchise-caliber player he showed glimpses of potentially being in the past.

Even so, having him and Bam Adebayo might not be enough to contend for a championship right now.

Of course, young players like Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kel’el Ware seem to have a bright future ahead of them, but this team still needs another spark.

They also need someone to run the offense, as they don’t have a true point guard at the moment.

Erik Spoelstra is one of the best tacticians in the game, and the Heat have excelled at finding and developing talent that other teams often overlook.

Nevertheless, they will still need some more time and assets to field a competitive team and get back to where they need to be.

Pat Riley could certainly use a big win in free agency or the trade market after years of swings and misses, and while some believe he’s lost his pull in the league already, it wouldn’t be wise to bet against him.
