The Seattle SuperSonics family said goodbye to a legend on Thursday morning.
On X, the team announced the passing of Gus “The Wizard” Williams, whom the team referred to as a “legend + champion.”
Williams helped lead the SuperSonics to its only NBA championship back in 1979 and remained an icon of the franchise.
He was 71 years old.

Williams spent six seasons playing in Seattle, averaging 20.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 2.3 steals.
He came in second for Rookie of the Year after entering the league in 1975-76.
During his 11 years in the league, he earned two All-Star selections and was an All-NBA member twice.
He started his career with the Golden State Warriors before moving to the SuperSonics, the Washington Bullets, and the Atlanta Hawks.
He retired from the league after the 1986-87 season.
Williams was a key part of the SuperSonics during the most exciting chapter in their history.
They were the hottest team in the league and won their sole championship in 1979.
Williams stuck with the team after they became champions and was with them until 1984.
The franchise is no longer around, at least for now.
There is a lot of talk about the SuperSonics coming back in the next few years, as NBA commissioner Adam Silver has hinted at an expansion.
Unfortunately, Williams will not be around to witness the return of the team he loved so much.
Fans of the SuperSonics will remember what he did for Seattle and how he was part of an amazing period for the team and its legacy.
Tributes will continue to pour in from all over the league, celebrating Williams’ life and career.
