The Golden State Warriors had to get a little creative.
Jimmy Butler shut them down by telling them that he wouldn’t sign a contract extension with them, so they tried to get Kevin Durant instead.
Durant reportedly expressed no interest in returning to the Bay Area, so GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. had to pivot again and pursue Butler.
Eventually, both sides could agree on terms for a contract extension, and the blockbuster deal was done.
Following the loss to the Utah Jazz, Warriors star Stephen Curry shared his thoughts on this transaction (via Anthony Slater).
While he acknowledged that there had been a lot of drama surrounding Butler, he still expected him to be fully bought in now:
“I know there was a lot of drama down there (in Miami). Who really knows what the story is. We expect to have a motivated, committed Jimmy,” he said.

The Warriors will have to make some big adjustments to make sure Butler fits there.
On defense, he can have the same free safety-like role Andre Iguodala had when he was there, and he could give them a massive boost on that end.
He is also a high-IQ passer who can occasionally take on playmaking responsibilities, which makes him a perfect fit alongside Curry and Draymond Green.
Then again, he’s not the sharpshooter Curry has been used to sharing the court with for most of his career.
He’s never been a good three-point shooter, and while he can create his own shot and get to the line almost at will, it might take some time before he adapts to this new setting.
The Warriors took some significant risks with this move, and it will be intriguing to see if this gamble pays off.
