Udinese manager Kosta Runjaic shared his thoughts ahead of Sunday’s match against Genoa in a recent press conference. The coach addressed various topics, including tactical considerations, player availability, and the team’s recent performances.
Regarding the potential switch to a four-man defense, Runjaic remained coy: “Currently, I can’t tell you how we’ll play; we’re thinking about it a lot. We’ve tested this system in the last week, and it’s positive to be able to play with two formations. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but the most important factor is giving 100% from the start.”
On the possibility of playing Lucca and Davis together, the coach said: “It’s a possibility. They’ve already played together and complement each other well. They’re learning to understand each other better. We’ve also tried two strikers in training, and we have Thauvin and several young talents like Iker Bravo, who is training well. We have many options.”
Runjaic emphasized the importance of home support: “We’re playing at home, we’ll be supported by our fans. So far, we’ve provided convincing performances in our stadium, and we want to continue like this, even if it won’t be easy.”
The coach also commented on Genoa’s recent change in management: “We’ve been focusing on Genoa for several days. There are still many things they need to show given the change of coach, but it seems they’ll play from the back, which will be a nice challenge since it’s also our philosophy.”
Addressing player availability, Runjaic confirmed Kristensen’s readiness and Bijol’s absence due to suspension. He also discussed the midfield options, mentioning Zarraga and Ekkelenkamp as potential replacements for Payero.
Reflecting on the recent draw with Empoli, Runjaic said: “Drawing at Empoli after three consecutive defeats was important because the psychological factor also counts. When you work hard, it’s important to get points.”
The coach expressed confidence in Thauvin’s abilities despite a challenging performance in the last match: “He’s an important player for me and the team. He’s a fighter. He still needs time after the injury. For me, he’ll score on Sunday and put in an even better performance.”
Runjaic concluded by discussing young talent Iker Bravo and providing an update on Sanchez’s recovery: “If all goes well, we’ll see him on the field by January at the latest. He’s an important player in the locker room and in training. I can’t wait to have him back.”
