Inter’s captain Lautaro Martinez and coach Simone Inzaghi addressed the media on the eve of the Supercoppa final derby against Milan. Martinez, with refreshing honesty, acknowledged his current goal drought.
“I feel different. I’ve experienced moments like this before, but this is the worst, the most difficult,” Martinez admitted. The top scorer’s lack of goals is weighing on him, but he maintains perspective: “At the start of the season, I had little rest and couldn’t prepare as I wanted. Now I feel I’m returning to form and I’m calm. Other teammates are scoring.”
Responding to observations that the team seemed to be playing for him in the semi-final, Martinez expressed appreciation: “Of course it pleases me that teammates want to set me up for goals. The team is important, they recognize the work one does for the squad. When I’m not scoring, I always try to contribute in other ways, and yes, I think I’m doing that.”
Coach Inzaghi, seated beside Martinez, offered his perspective on his striker’s goal drought: “I too was a forward, though not as strong as Lauti. I know what it means to go through a period without scoring. I see him calm, working well. He played a great match in the semi-final. Even if he’s not scoring, the team is winning and playing well. We must continue like this, knowing he’ll give us a huge hand. Right now, we’re getting goals from midfielders and defenders. We need to keep creating chances.”
Looking ahead to the derby final, Martinez expressed excitement: “It motivates us a lot. It’s a final, a derby. It’s the first trophy we’re competing for. The team is doing well, which is very important. We’re facing a strong team; Milan is the only side that has beaten us in the league. We’ve watched their semi-final and today we’ll continue studying them. It will be a beautiful match to play.”
