As the January transfer window approaches, Roma finds themselves at a crucial juncture, balancing financial constraints with the need for squad reinforcement. The club’s strategy revolves around key players’ futures and potential new arrivals.
Corriere dello Sport report how Paulo Dybala’s situation has been a focal point of speculation. Despite rumours linking him to Galatasaray, manager Claudio Ranieri has confirmed the Argentine’s desire to stay in Rome. The club, initially open to selling Dybala, has shifted its stance and is now considering a contract extension. Dybala himself is reportedly willing to discuss a new deal until 2027, potentially with a restructured salary to aid the club’s financial planning.
With Dybala likely to stay, Roma’s focus for outgoing transfers has shifted. Lorenzo Pellegrini and Bryan Cristante are now among the prime candidates for potential departures, provided suitable offers arrive. These moves would be part of Roma’s broader strategy to reduce the wage bill and generate positive value.
Ranieri has been clear about his needs to sporting director Florent Ghisolfi and the Friedkin ownership. While the core of his preferred starting eleven is set, the manager is seeking high-quality alternatives to increase competition within the squad. However, any incoming transfers are contingent on outgoing moves.
Besides Pellegrini, players like Enzo Le Fee, Mario Hermoso, and Nicola Zalewski (whose contract expires in six months) are under scrutiny. Zeki Celik, with interest from Turkey and France, and Tommaso Baldanzi, seeking more playing time, could also be on the move.
Once the wage bill is reduced, Roma aims to bring in three key reinforcements: a right-back/winger to fill a long-standing void, a central defender (possibly two if Hermoso leaves), and a backup striker for Artem Dovbyk.
The situation of Matias Soulé remains intriguing. Never fully integrated into the Roma setup, he could attract interest from other clubs. Meanwhile, Mile Svilar, after a year as the first-choice goalkeeper, awaits a contract renewal that would better reflect his current status in the team.
