Napoli’s ultimatum to Kvaratskhelia: Renew or be sold

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that the negotiations between Napoli and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia over a contract renewal have reached a critical point. Despite a shared desire to find an agreement, the situation remains precarious. Kvaratskhelia, the Georgian star who has become the symbol of Napoli’s team, currently earns one of the lowest salaries in the squad, with a net income of 1.8 million euros per season. This disparity is particularly striking given his talent and the inflated salaries common in top European clubs. Napoli’s latest offer stands at 6 million euros net per year, including bonuses, for a five-year contract.

However, Kvaratskhelia’s representatives initially sought 8 million euros, though they have shown willingness to compromise. The main sticking point appears to be the release clause. The player’s camp wants an 80 million euro clause, while Napoli president De Laurentiis insists on at least 120 million, similar to Victor Osimhen’s contract, or no clause at all.

Giovanni Manna, Napoli’s sporting director, addressed the situation at the Social Football Summit 2024. He emphasized the club’s desire to reward Kvaratskhelia’s contributions but noted that external factors complicate the negotiations. Manna stated that while there’s no immediate pressure or deadline, if an agreement isn’t reached soon, discussions may be postponed until June.

The delay in reaching an agreement has caught the attention of other top clubs. Both Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona are reportedly interested in Kvaratskhelia and have been in contact with his agent, Mamuka Jugeli, to secure a potential advantage in future negotiations.

Napoli finds itself at a crossroads. The club recognizes Kvaratskhelia as a rare talent discovered three years ago, both a technical and financial coup. However, they are firm in their stance, unwilling to be seen as a stepping stone for players. The message is clear: Napoli wants to retain its stars but on terms that align with the club’s vision and financial structure.
