Miami's Two Future Traded First Rounders Become Unprotected If They Miss Playoffs
The future first round picks of the Miami Heat will be heavily impacted by whether they reach the playoffs this season. If the Heat are in the lottery, then a first round pick owed to the Oklahoma City Thunder will become unprotected in 2026. It would also impact a first round pick the Heat owe to the Charlotte Hornets for the Terry Rozier trade where it would go from a 2027 protected pick to an unprotected 2028 first round selection. Miami originally sent out the initial first round to the Los Angeles Clippers as part of their sign-and-trade to acquire Jimmy Butler in 2019. The Thunder later acquired that pick from the Clippers and changed the terms of the selection as part of a February 2022 trade involving KZ Okpala. The Heat are currently tied for the fifth in the Eastern Conference and have a reasonably good shot at reaching the playoffs regardless of what happens with the ongoing Butler situation.
