As soon as the Dallas Mavericks traded for Kyrie Irving, some speculated that it was never going to work with Luka Doncic.
Irving’s history of wreaking havoc within an organization, his previous feuds with coaches and teammates, and the fact that they were two ball-dominant players raised doubts about their pairing.
That wasn’t the case at all, and they even led the team to the NBA Finals.
Despite this, it marked the end of an era, as the Mavs parted ways with Doncic and gave Irving the keys to the car.
When asked about the Doncic trade, the veteran point guard admitted to being as surprised as everybody else.
He also talked about how close they had become (via Grant Afseth).

The Doncic trade will go down as one of the most talked-about, shocking, and controversial transactions in NBA history.
Mavs GM Nico Harrison said that the team needed to get better and bigger on defense, which is why they went after a player like Anthony Davis.
Even so, it seems like there was much more going on there.
Doncic stated that he gave them no indication of a desire to leave or that he would not sign a contract extension there.
This will now be the Kyrie Irving show.
And while that has rarely translated to playoff success, the Mavs hope that the former NBA champion will be just what they need to get back to the ultimate stage.
