Jonathan David: “I’m talking with Lille, not ruling out renewal”

In an unexpected turn of events, Jonathan David, one of the most sought-after strikers in European football, has hinted at the possibility of extending his stay at Lille OSC. The Canadian international, whose contract is set to expire on June 30, 2025, has been the subject of intense transfer speculation, with several top clubs across Europe, including Inter, Juventus, Milan, and Napoli, showing keen interest.

In a recent interview with La Voix du Nord, David shed light on his future plans, stating, “As President Letang has mentioned on several occasions, discussions are ongoing. We are talking, and no decision has been made yet. I’m not closing any doors; it’s a 50-50 situation.” These remarks have opened up the possibility of a scenario that would be nothing short of sensational – David’s continued presence in France.

The 24-year-old striker has been in scintillating form this season, already netting 17 goals in 26 appearances across all competitions. His performances have not only attracted attention from Italian Serie A giants but also from Premier League clubs and, more recently, Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Nassr, home to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Lille’s president, Olivier Letang, had previously stated the club’s stance on David’s immediate future: “There will be no significant sales in January. It’s out of the question that he, being a very valuable player for us with great performance, could leave during the winter transfer window.”

While David’s comments have sparked hope among Lille supporters, the financial aspect of any potential deal remains a significant factor. Reports suggest that if David were to leave Lille, he would be seeking a salary in the range of 6-7 million euros per season, along with a substantial commission for his agents.
