Coppa Italia | Atalanta 0-1 Bologna: Match Report

Bologna etched their name in the history books by securing a place in the semi-finals for the first time this century. The Rossoblu emerged victorious with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta, courtesy of a late goal from substitute Santiago Castro.

The match was a tense affair from the outset, with both sides creating opportunities. Atalanta’s Charles De Ketelaere tested Bologna goalkeeper Lukasz Skorpuski early on, while Tommaso Pobega came close for the visitors just before half-time.

The game saw its share of drama, including an injury-forced substitution for Bologna and a contentious moment when Atalanta appealed for a red card and penalty, both of which were denied.

As the match progressed, both managers made strategic changes. Atalanta introduced January signing Daniel Maldini for his debut, along with Juan Cuadrado and Lazar Samardzic. Bologna also saw the introduction of Stefan Posch, who ironically faced his former club just days after joining Atalanta on loan.

The decisive moment came in the 80th minute when substitute Castro, who had only been on the pitch for a few minutes, met a Charalampos Lykogiannis free-kick to guide the ball past Rui Patricio, securing Bologna’s victory.

The match concluded with some tension as Atalanta’s Marten De Roon received a yellow card for pushing Dan Ndoye in stoppage time.

This victory marks a significant milestone for Bologna, as it’s their first Coppa Italia semi-final appearance since 1999. The Rossoblu will now eagerly await the outcome of the Juventus-Empoli quarter-final to determine their semi-final opponents, with the two-legged tie scheduled for April.
