Jonas Valanciunas addresses trade rumors
So dealing Robinson’s $14.3 million salary for Valanciunas’s $9.9 million theoretically works, although the Knicks would almost certainly have to include draft compensation. They own several future second-round picks but can only deal one first-rounder. Coincidentally, that originally belonged to the Wizards. “What can happen in the future, maybe tomorrow, maybe even today, I don’t know,” Valanciunas said about the possibility of being dealt. “If it happens, it happens. It’s a young team still putting the pieces together. Everything can happen.”Source: New York Post More on this storyline In the meantime, Valanciunas is conducting himself as a pro. He’s played every game this season and said he understood the deal when he signed — “They wanted me, they showed some trust in me, so I’m happy here.” “You’ve got to stay patient,” he added. “But we get better, we practice and the young guys drive me to get better, too. I feel the kick in my ass to practice and get better and work on my skills. So I’m taking advantage from that.” -via New York Post / December 31, 2024 Stefan Bondy: Spoke this morning with Jonas Valanciunas (14 points, 5 rebounds early in the first half), and he said there was some interest from Knicks in free agency this summer: “I heard something from that side. But there’s a lot of X&Os.; Salary cap issues, this and that. Strategic stuff. Every team does what they think is the best for them.” -via x.com / December 30, 2024 As The Athletic previously reported, the Lakers have been patient on the trade front, aiming to use their first-round picks (they have access to their 2029, 2030 and/or 2031 first-rounders but can trade two of those — 2029 and 2031 — at most) closer to the trade deadline when they had a better gauge on their roster. But the exception to that approach, according to team and league sources earlier in the month, was a shorter-term opportunity to trade for Jonas Valančiūnas, Cam Johnson and/or Finney-Smith. The Lakers have had an interest in Valančiūnas dating back to the summer. Brooklyn, of course, pivoted to being sellers when it traded Dennis Schröder to Golden State on Dec. 15. -via New York Times / December 30, 2024
