The Los Angeles Lakers needed to make a statement on Wednesday night.
They couldn’t hold on to beat the San Antonio Spurs at home.
They couldn’t afford to go through the same lethargic play vs. the Miami Heat.
Erik Spoelstra’s team got off to a strong start.
Then, the Lakers rallied in the second half for a nine-point win.
Coach J.J. Redick raved about the team’s defense when asked what made the difference in this game (via Spectrum SportsNet).

The first-year head coach pointed out the team’s defensive effort and communication on that end of the floor.
Granted, the Heat shot 53% from the floor and 44% from beyond the arc, so it’s not like the Lakers challenged every shot.
Then again, they did force 20 turnovers.
The Lakers have shown some strong potential under Redick’s tutelage.
He’s proven to be a savvy tactician and made some interesting adjustments at times.
The team, however, has gone up and down for most of the campaign, and they still lack the consistency to be considered a championship contender.
They have the personnel to be a very good defensive team.
They need to bring that same effort and communication to the table night in and night out.
The Lakers are the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference and look like a lock to make the playoffs.
Adding some more talent before the trade deadline will be crucial to their aspirations going forward.
