The Miami Heat have been the NBA’s biggest overachievers over the last five years, but it appears they have now gotten every drop they can out of their current core of players.

Star forward Jimmy Butler has a player option for next season he can decline, and ever since he missed the Heat’s first-round exit to the Boston Celtics in last season’s playoffs, there has been lots of uncertainty about his future with the team.

There are rumors he wants to be traded before this season’s trade deadline, and when he was asked if he wants to stay in Miami, he sounded non-committal, per Zachary Weinberger.

Butler’s scoring numbers are down, but if he does indeed want out, he could still provide a good team with what could be the final piece it needs to contend for the NBA championship.

When he first came to South Florida in 2019, he transformed a stale, mediocre Heat team and took it to the NBA Finals right away in his first season there.

Butler reportedly has some preferred trade destinations, which include the Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks, but the Heat don’t seem inclined to grant Butler his trade request, if he has in fact requested a trade or will request one soon.

The Heat currently have a 16-14 record and are in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, and they haven’t been able to find any substantial consistency this season.

Perhaps their best bet would be to trade Butler for draft capital and a couple of decent young prospects in order to start retooling around Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo.
