The Golden State Warriors have been in a gradual state of decay following their last NBA championship in 2022, and there was almost a sense of desperation emanating from the team as it was groping for a way to pry open their championship window again.

They made a big move by trading for disgruntled forward Jimmy Butler, a six-time All-Star who prominently demanded that the Miami Heat deal him prior to the NBA deadline.

Butler, who has not played since Jan. 21, reportedly is about to return to the court when his new team visits the Chicago Bulls.

“Jimmy Butler is cleared to make his Warriors debut tomorrow night in Chicago. Not listed on injury report. Neither are Steph Curry and Draymond Green. Warriors expected to have all three in what feels like beginning of a 31-game sprint to the finish line,” Anthony Slater of The Athletic wrote on X.

Butler helped the Heat overachieve and reach the NBA Finals twice while narrowly missing out on a third trip despite not having a very talented roster.

But the Heat had exhausted their potential and patience with him, and he now will be on a Warriors team that has an aging Curry and Green along with some young and intriguing complementary players.

The Warriors gave up Andrew Wiggins, Dennis Schroder, Kyle Anderson, Lindy Waters III and a 2025 first-round draft pick to get Butler, which means they still have Jonathan Kuminga, Buddy Hield and Brandin Podziemski.

Butler’s true impact for Golden State likely won’t come until next season, once the Warriors have had a full training camp with him.

There are plenty who feel this was a very risky move and that he ultimately won’t fit in with their fast-moving, team-oriented style of play.
