Gasperini Reflects on Atalanta’s Coppa Italia Exit

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini shared his thoughts following his team’s quarter-final Coppa Italia loss against Bologna at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.

The experienced coach began his post-match interview with Sport Mediaset by praising the quality of the game: “I think it was a good match, open, with two teams trying to win. Whoever scored first had a great chance of advancing. Unfortunately, we’re struggling to make an impact from set pieces: we’ve conceded goals in too many recent matches, and it’s a situation that’s penalizing us.”

Gasperini then commented on the debut of new signing Daniel Maldini: “He’s only just arrived. He had two or three nice, quality moments and had a good opportunity to score right away. He’ll certainly help us. We hope to contribute to his development for the national team as well.”

When asked about the substitution of Charles De Ketelaere, Gasperini explained the reasoning behind his rotation policy: “We have him and Retegui because Lookman is out and Maldini has arrived. We play every three days, and attackers can’t play that much. This applies to all teams. With five substitutions, it’s rare for offensive players to finish the game.”

The Atalanta manager concluded his interview by putting the cup exit into perspective: “We’ve been eliminated from a competition where we’ve always progressed in recent years. On Saturday we have the league, and we’re very well positioned.”
