Manchester City have made Champions League history with their win over Sparta Prague. Pep Guardiola‘s side faced the Czech side on Wednesday night and secured a comfortable 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium. That result means that Man City are now 26 games unbeaten in Europe’s premier competition – the longest run of its kind on the competition’s history. City were previously 25 games unbeaten, a run that matched the previous record set by rivals Manchester United. The Red Devils went 25 games without defeat in the Champions League between 2007 and 2009. That included their famous Champions League final victory over Chelsea in May 2008 in Moscow. In that match Cristiano Ronaldo‘s opener was cancelled out by Frank Lampard, before the Red Devils won on penalties thanks to missed kicks from John Terry and Nicolas Anelka. Man City’s current run includes their Champions League success of 2022/23. While they only reached the quarter finals last term, their elimination came after two draws with Real Madrid led to a penalty shootout defeat, meaning that they technically didn’t lose the game. Of course Los Blancos went on to win the competition, beating Borussia Dortmund at Wembley. With City already three games unbeaten in the Champions League this term, they’ll be hoping to deep into the competition in order to try and claim the prize once again. GettyPep Guardiola’s side are just unstoppable right now[/caption] Their record-breaking run was aided by their Champions League success in 2023getty Phil Foden got the night off to the perfect start when he scored just three minutes into the game. While John Stones and Matheus Nunes found the net, Erling Haaland bagged a double to put the game beyond doubt. Since the 2019/20 season, Haaland (44) now has the most Champions League goals after leapfrogging Robert Lewandowski (43). It also means that he now has more Champions League goals than Alessandro Del Piero (42) and Neymar (43), while equaling the tally of Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.
