The Champions League round of 16 has come to an end, and it’s been drama central on Tuesday and Wednesday. Real Madrid edged past local rivals Atletico Madrid, winning 4-3 on penalties at the Wanda Metropolitano. But there was a controversial moment with one of Atleti’s penalties, scored by Julian Alvarez, was deemed illegal as he kicked the ball twice before beating Thibaut Courtois. On Tuesday, Liverpool‘s journey was ended as they were beaten by Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 on penalties at Anfield, with Gianluigi Donnarumma stopping Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones after Ousmane Dembele levelled the tie. There were no such problems for Aston Villa and Arsenal, who eased past Club Brugge and PSV Eindhoven respectively. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan and Barcelona also booked their place in the quarter-finals.
