When the 2024-25 season began, a lot of people expected the Brooklyn Nets to tank and focus on their future instead of their present.
Nets star Cam Johnson has heard the pleas about tanking and isn’t paying attention to them.
Speaking to Erik Slater and the press on Wednesday evening, Johnson shot down talk of his team throwing in the towel to get better draft picks.
“Our job is not to try to get a draft pick. Our job is simply to win basketball games, and that’s what we’re gonna put our full effort towards… If that’s what they think, then they’re not really a fan,” Johnson emphatically said.

Johnson’s forceful answer makes it clear that his team isn’t about to stop competing.
They aren’t going to pay any mind to potential draft picks and will instead play their hardest, no matter what it means for the future of the franchise.
The Nets are indeed performing better than some people expected.
They are the 12th team in the East with a 20-34 record, which is obviously far from playoff contention.
But they have had several surprising wins in 2024-25 and are playing with more heart and grit than some of their opponents.
With just a few well-timed victories, they could earn entry into the play-in tournament and perhaps even push into the postseason.
Johnson is a huge part of any success they have found, averaging 19.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.
For months, analysts expected Johnson to be traded to another team, but he is staying put in Brooklyn and believes in himself and his teammates.
