A report released by BILD on Thursday morning suggests that Borussia Dortmund will find it “hard to keep” Gregor Kobel should the Bundesliga side miss out on Champions League football with Chelsea interested in signing the Swiss goalkeeper.
Kobel signed a contract extension until 2028 in October 2023 and stated that he ‘wants to win titles’ at Dortmund, but is yet to come close. Die Schwarzgelben finished fifth in the Bundesliga last season, 27 points behind Meisterschale winners Bayer Leverkusen.
They are also off the pace this season. Eighth after 14 games under Nuri Şahin, Dortmund already find themselves 11 points behind Bayern Munich, while missing out on Champions League football is entirely possible. Not only that, the DFB Pokal won’t be going to Dortmund after Kobel and Co. were eliminated by Wolfsburg in a 1-0 defeat.
Is Gregor Kobel a frustrated figure?
BILD suggest that Kobel is a frustrated figure. After joining from Stuttgart in July 2021, the Swiss has become a mainstay in goal, playing 136 games across all competitions, but is yet to win a single accolade.
After missing out on the Bundesliga title on the final day of the season in 2023 and the Champions League final against Real Madrid in June, Borussia Dortmund have been unable to get over the finishing line when it mattered.
Should Borussia Dortmund miss out on Champions League football, Chelsea’s chances of signing Kobel increase tenfold, while BILD further add that the Premier League side would have no problem paying a €70m – €80m fee for the goalkeeper.
