Bennacer Joins Marseille: “My Choice, Not Because Milan Didn’t Want Me”

Ismael Bennacer has bid farewell to AC Milan and embarked on a new journey with Marseille. The Algerian midfielder’s move, which came in the final hours of the winter transfer window, has reshaped Milan’s market strategy, prompting them to sign Warren Bondo from Monza as his replacement.

During his introductory press conference at Marseille, Bennacer emphasized that the decision to join OM was entirely his own. He stated, “I’m here because it was my desire. I told my agent that I wanted to come to OM and not to any other club. I’m here today and I’m very happy.”

Addressing concerns about his fitness following a serious injury in September, Bennacer assured, “I’m feeling very good. I returned about a month and a half ago. I’m at 100%. If I’m available for a match, it’s because I’m at 100%. I’m ready to give my all, whether it’s for 10, 20, or 90 minutes.”

The midfielder acknowledged that while he hasn’t played a full 90 minutes recently, he feels physically strong. “I played three days ago, I’ll train today, and I’ll be in the squad on Sunday. I came here to win and try to give my best,” he added.

Bennacer revealed his long-standing admiration for Marseille, describing the move as “a really interesting project” for him. He mentioned previous contact with the club last summer, which didn’t materialize at the last moment.

Regarding his integration into the team, Bennacer praised his new teammates and manager Roberto De Zerbi. “There are some very good players in midfield. De Zerbi has spoken to me about how he would like to use me. I’ve always liked the idea of playing under him as a coach, and now it’s happening, so it’s even better,” he said.

The midfielder also shed light on why a move didn’t happen last summer: “I was returning from injury when the first contacts with Marseille occurred, but Fonseca was counting on me, which is why discussions didn’t progress further.”

Looking ahead, Bennacer expressed ambitious goals for his time at Marseille. “We want to fight for the title. I’ve already won before, and if I’m here, it’s for clear objectives, both in the medium and long term. The mentality here requires winning every game, and we’re building something new and strong, even if it won’t be easy,” he concluded.
