Alan Shearer issues title race warning to Liverpool – despite the Reds' impressive start to the campaign under Arne Slot

Alan Shearer has insisted that the Premier League title race still has a lot to offer as we approach the mid-way point of the campaign.

Liverpool sit top of the table at Christmas, following a remarkable start in Arne Slot’s first campaign on Merseyside.

Despite a making just a single senior signing in the summer, the Dutchman has so far evaded the trap that often afflicts teams when a long-serving manager departs a club.

The Reds have suffered just defeat in all competitions under Slot, and currently sit four points clear of Chelsea with a game in hand.

Meanwhile reigning champions Manchester City have all but fallen out of the race as they remain in the midst of their worst ever spell under Pep Guardiola. 

However, despite Liverpool’s impressive start Shearer warned that the title race is a by no means a forgone conclusion.

But Shearer insisted ‘there’s still plenty to play for’ in the title race as we approach the midway point of the campaign

‘Look, there’s still plenty to play for,’ the former England captain told Betfair.

‘But Liverpool look really impressive, I know they’ve conceded a few goals, two at Newcastle, two at home against Fulham and three on Sunday.

‘But their performance against Spurs and their response was magnificent, particularly after Chelsea drawing and Arsenal winning and putting a little bit of pressure on them. 

‘They looked really at it and a strong outfit with players that are ready to come off the bench and help their team. They’re going to take some beating, definitely.

‘I think this season has been a really different season so far for so many reasons. Look at Bournemouth, Forest, Chelsea, even Liverpool with their new manager. 

‘There are so many different things that have gone on and the unpredictability that we’ve seen up to now has been incredible.’

While being top at Christmas has often proven to be an early indicator of title success, Liverpool have a seriously unwanted record in that regard.

This season marks the seventh time the Reds have occupied top spot on December 25 since the top flight’s rebrand in 1992.

However, the only time they went on to clinch success with under Jurgen Klopp in the 2019-20 campaign.
