Wrexham handed League One title boost as rivals set to lose manager in Luton switch
Luton Town are set to appoint Matt Bloomfield as their new manager from Wycombe Wanderers, talkSPORT understands. The Hatters are set to trigger Bloomfield’s £100,000 release clause after holding positive talks with the 40-year-old over the weekend. Bloomfield is set to leave Wycombe for LutonGetty He will succeed Rob Edwards, who left by mutual agreement last week amid their fears of relegation from the Championship. Luton are 20th in the second tier and two points above the bottom three despite playing Premier League football last season. It is also understood that assistants Paul Trollope and Richie Kyle are expected to leave the club. Bloomfield will arrive at Kenilworth Road after featuring 557 times for Wycombe as a player before becoming their manager in February 2023. They are level on 51 points with Wrexham but are only ahead of the Welsh outfit on goal difference with 25 matches played. Bloomfield played in the Wycombe side that were promoted to the Championship in 2020 after winning the League One play-offs. However, they were relegated back to the third tier after just one season, with Bloomfield then retiring in February 2022. He was named as the head coach at Colchester United later that year and won nine of his 27 games in charge of the League Two side. Bloomfield returned to Wycombe when their long-term manager Gareth Ainsworth left for Queens Park Rangers. He has helped put them in contention for promotion with 15 wins and six draws in the current campaign. Bloomfield previously played for Wycombe from 2003 to 2022Getty However, Bloomfield will now take a step up to the Championship to a Luton side who are facing back-to-back relegations. The Hatters have lost six of their last seven games in all competitions, with a 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest their latest result. Luton have been beaten on 15 occasions in the Championship this season and their last win was against Derby County on December 20. Portsmouth are below them in the final safety spot in the table but have two games in hand.
