“We Weren’t Good or Intelligent”: Conceição’s Frustration After Milan’s Disappointing Draw with Cagliari

AC Milan’s head coach Sérgio Conceição expressed his disappointment following the 1-1 draw against Cagliari in the 20th round of Serie A. The match at San Siro saw goals from Morata for Milan and Zortea for Cagliari.

In his post-match interview, Conceição reflected on his team’s performance, analyzing the goals, key moments, and summarizing the current state of the Rossoneri.

Conceição began by stating, “I expected much more on all levels. In the first half, we lacked liveliness, there’s no denying it. It was the worst first half I’ve seen since I became a coach, and I’ve been doing this job for 13 years. We weren’t good or intelligent, while in the second half we improved slightly. In this match, I didn’t like my players at all. We lost two points, and I’m angry. If you play well and the game doesn’t go your way, that’s one thing. But not like this.”

He continued, “We lacked some width, Rafael (Leao) needed support, as did Pulisic on the other side. The players are too altruistic, but there are moments when they need to be simpler. Football is simple, you play it simply. Sometimes we look for the more difficult things. Today, at times, we stopped to film the match.”

Rafa Leao also spoke in the post-match interview, saying, “We needed to win to climb up the rankings. The first half was a bit strange, the second half slightly better. Then they were looking to counter-attack. Overall, we deserved a different match.”

Addressing Milan’s difficulties against smaller teams, Leao added, “We need to look at ourselves and continue working. In a few days, we have another match, and we’ll go there to win. Conceição has brought here the mentality of always looking forward. He has already transmitted his ideas of football to us.”
