In the high-stakes world of Test cricket, moments of brilliance can often shift the tide of a match. Such was the case on Day 4 of the fourth Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, where India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant delivered a stunning piece of fielding that led to the run-out of Australia‘s Mitchell Starc. This pivotal moment not only showcased Pant’s athleticism but also highlighted the intense pressure both teams faced at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
A crucial moment in the Boxing Day Test
As the fourth Test unfolded, Australia found themselves in a precarious position, struggling at 91 for 6 during their second innings. With a significant lead already established, every wicket became crucial for India as they sought to capitalize on their bowling strength. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj had already dismantled much of Australia’s batting lineup, leaving Starc and captain Pat Cummins to stabilize the innings. However, it was Pant’s remarkable fielding that would soon change the narrative.

Rishabh Pant catches Mitchell Starc short of the crease
The incident occurred during the 59th over when Starc, having just played a hard-length delivery from Bumrah, attempted a risky second run after hitting the ball behind square on the leg side. Cummins, however, was not interested in taking on the challenge. As Starc turned back, Pant seized the opportunity. Positioned perfectly behind the stumps, he collected the throw and executed a direct hit that left Starc stranded halfway down the pitch.
This run-out was reminiscent of legendary wicketkeeper MS Dhoni‘s trademark style and served as a reminder of Pant’s growing reputation as one of cricket’s most dynamic players. His quick reflexes and pinpoint accuracy not only sent Starc packing for just five runs but also reignited India’s hopes in a match that had begun to slip away.
