Speaking to kicker, VfB Stuttgart CEO Alexander Wehrle has weighed in on the speculation surrounding head coach Sebastian Hoeneß.
Recently, Hoeneß’s future has been linked to the future of Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen as the Stuttgart coach is seen as the Spaniard’s successor if he leaves the BayArena.
Wehrle was asked about Hoeneß’s future amid this speculation but remains sure that the former Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich II coach will stay at the club:
“My gut feeling tells me that we will be working together for a long time. For me, what matters is what Sebastian Hoeneß says to me. And as long as we have been working together, I have never heard him think about anything other than VfB.”
Adding:
“When you see him working, you know that he is convinced of the collaboration with VfB. We are too.”
During his 18-month spell in charge at the MHP Arena, Hoeneß has turned Stuttgart from a side-fighting relegation to finishing second in the table and qualifying for the Champions League. His second full season in charge has not been as successful as Stuttgart have struggled with competing on three fronts on top of an increase in injuries as well as the sales of key players in the summer.
VfB currently sit eighth in the Bundesliga following their 3-2 comeback win against Union Berlin on Friday evening. In Europe, Stuttgart plays Young Boys on Wednesday as they look to try to secure a place in the playoffs.
