The GOP is poised to have a unified government after a resounding election sweep
Republicans are on track to keep their majority in the US House of Representatives, according to a projection by the election analysis website Decision Desk HQ.
The win would bolster President-elect Donald Trump’s decisive victory over his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, and add to the GOP control of the Senate and the 6-3 conservative majority in the Supreme Court.
On Monday the GOP won its 218th seat in the 435-seat lower chamber. This means the party will remain the leading force in the House despite losing four seats to the Democrats on November 5.
Trump thanked House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday, praising him for “doing a terrific job.”
The Democrats lost control of the Senate last week, with the GOP winning 53 of the 100 seats. Control of both houses of Congress will be crucial for crafting legislation aimed at delivering Trump’s agenda on much-debated issues, such as immigration and the economy.

In a statement on Wednesday, Johnson said that the “historic election has proven that a majority of Americans are eager for secure borders, lower costs, peace through strength, and a return to common sense.” He added that Republicans were looking forward to working with Trump as a “unified government.”
American news organizations and analysts have speculated that the triumph of Trump and the GOP is a sign of a broader political realignment of the country. Multiple Democratic strategists and allies have suggested that voters were deeply dissatisfied with inflation and have rejected the “woke” agenda championed by left-leaning activists and progressives within the Democratic Party.
